Little discussion about Rex Network hosted giveaways and what should be done with those

edited October 2016 in Deals & Freebies
You know, I dont really like having to bring up this topic for reasons Im gonna explain further above but I suppose at this point this will be necessary.

So as some of you may have heard already, gimme.one, a distribution platform made by the very well known community REX that specialises in hosting random key giveaways and whatsnot got hacked thus putting many peoples personal detail into danger. We all heard the story about Valve banning gleam.io links and how said site decided to cut business with people that were not devs, however that forementioned case is without a doubt a true case of unprofessional management.

on FGF subreddit, they made an announcement about those guys, which shed light on the MANY scumbag thing these guys have done, and apart the shameless "renaming games they have given away already in order to fool people its somethign else". they also have a pretty nice list of other things (taken from said subreddit post):

-Lying about the items included in the giveaway
-Constantly using the same games
-Requiring absurd amounts of work to get items
-Allegedly being one of the biggest reasons for Gleam.io to stop dealing with non devs
-Creating the new site (Gimme), having issues with numerous things in it spanning from it being broken, covered with referral links, scareware ad links, shady -links, malware links (allegedly) site owner's arguing among each other causing the site to go down (allegedly)
-The biggest issue I've seen so-long, taking over twitter accounts used to sign into the site, and following/tweeting unwanted things

With all that in mind, I believe we need to seriously reconsider whether or not we want to still allow these and basically becoming "part of the problem" or just banning each and every Rex Network giveaway altogether. And here comes the dilemma: wouldnt it be a tad hypocritical to ban those but let other giveaways slip by that may be using equally questionable practices? and how to avoid filtering out the crap without throwing out the baby with the bathwater so to say?

Im not pretending that this would suddenly fix the problem at hand altogether, as many sites and groups would more than happily spam their links regardless, lets not fool ourselves thinking otherwise. But as it stands, something needs to be done.

My personal proposal would be, if @shoppa and @K3W3L also agree on this is to "blacklist" Rex Network and related giveaways UNTIl they can clear their reputation. Its not a perfect solution but in my humble opinion that much is a necessary measure to make.

With that said, hearing what you guys think about this would be also very important since such changes would affect many giveaways that are currently posted in the Deals and Freebies section. Your opinion will have a deciding weight about this.

  • I personally never used the giveaways from this site, because it forces me to give them access to my twitter account, which I'm not going to accept. It is ok to ask for twitter follows or retweets, which I might do if I want the game, but both of those can be checked without getting access to my twitter account, and therefore there is no reason for them to insist on you giving them the access.
I'm in no way going to allow them take over my account in order to twit or follow people in my name.

I feel like it's a huge lie, because they say the action required is "follow _____" or "retweet _____", but the real action they require is "give us access to post and follow people in your name whenever we want to", so they are not really being honest with you about the use they are going to do once you give them access.

I also heard a lot of times about people who said their twitter accounts got banned because of this site spamming in their name. In my opinion that alone is a good enough reason to completely block this site.
  • My 2 cents: We shouldn't support questionable and/or dangerous business practices by driving traffic via our users to their sites. By continuing to allow links to such sites, we endanger our users and thereby do them a disservice.
  • Blacklist it. As you said, run by scumbags in an unprofessional manner. Absurd number of tasks with a good chance to get nothing or something different than expected. In a word, garbage.
  • Please blacklist them. They giveaway the same games over and over and I'm one of the people who got banned for having it "linked" to my twitter. I had to confirm my phone number and change my password just to get access back to my account.

glad to see Im not the only who thinks that.
  • Actually, I always used some dummy accounts to log into their "giveaways".
I know about the crap they do to the twitter accounts, and I always, I mean really always, after getting the key, make a big clean-up on the twitter account I used, deleting their profiles, scam and when necessary even going into the setup function to delete any apps that should not be there.

When you are aware of the risks and you know into what you're engaged, there is not specific problem to me.
Taking apart their questionable behavior, of course.
I never give any information that I can't clearly publish. Anywhere.
So I don't mind what they'll do with the useless info they stole me with their apps.

I completely agree with this. I don't want to encourage people to support shady websites.

I don't see a problem with them giving away the same games more than once, or their site breaking (this can be accidental), but lying to or misleading users does not sit well with me.

Also, why do so may groups insist on so many "actions"? It's annoying for people!
  • I agree to ban them, no questionable person must be allowed to have access in our accounts. I am revoking access now of all apps I don't trust on twitter, thanks.

I've never liked REX from the start.

I remember all too well when REX's owner, Daniel Bink, used to frequent this site, creating giveaways for games that were previously given away for free in order to promote his group or whatever other bullshit. Then he got banned for badmouthing shoppa. Speaks volumes about his character.

As such, I whole-heartedly support any blacklisting and banning of any of their giveaways on this site, and if I had things my own way, I'd rather they be blacklisted permanently. In addition, I will look into removing any giveaways of those should they be posted. Their exploitation of social media info is incredibly unscrupulous.

As far as I'm concerned all dedicated giveaway sites are shady, there's always an ulterior motive. If you use your real accounts for any of those sites the joke's on you tbh. Use dummy accounts and a browser running in a VM if you want to visit shady sites.

PS: Also goes for many of those games being given away, wouldn't touch them with a stick. At least Valve finally wisened up and doesn't store your Steam login data quite as easily accessible anymore...
  • I agree , i stoppe dusing there site long ago since they lie about gibs and (ᵔᴥᵔ) . i use other suff , and i think rex will disapper in to the shadow so there is no need for banning them.
  • Personally, I'm not using gimme.one anymore, after I had to allow their twitter app to use my account "in the background". On first occasion, my account got temporarily banned by twitter immediately.
Also, the site used to have shady ads an pop-ups that made my antivirus alarm go off!

I believe we all agree on this then, though im curious to hear shoppa's opinion well

So glad that they always asked for twitter.
Because of this I never did any of their giveaways because I didn't wanted to go through the task of creating an account.
And my dad said that I would achieve nothing by being a lazy bastard, HA!

I'm in with you guys on this.
I'd rather just get a couple of games a month that are being handed down by their legitimate owners and developers than 20 on 3 days that were blackmailed by groups of human waste.

This is kinda like Coke here in Mexico. People know it's bad and are constantly reminded of it (this drink alone is the second leading cause of diabetes in my country). Yet everybody seems to completely ignore it.
Why? Because the supply never stops. This thing keeps flowing.

Banning them would not be an attack against them. Or an act of anger/hate. Banning them is just the course of action that WGN? took to protect IT'S users.

Kinda like a mom who buys you some juice instead of a coke. She's not harming the company or the economy. She's just looking up for her child.

By the way, if anyone gave them access and wants to revoke it, go to twitter -> settings -> apps(middle left side) -> revoke access

Now on topic: If they're fishy blacklist them, sure. It's important for WGN to protect their users from people that have proven they're here to abuse the naivety of the users rather then for the joy of sharing their product.

What do you mean by "were blackmailed by groups"? Did they give keys that were not legit/force developers to give them keys? :O
  • Yeah, let's just block them altogether.

Not saying who or always. But keys in the past where blackmailed by another group of a-holes. I'm not entirely sure that Rex group does it. But looking at how dirty and unorganized their deeds are. I would not be surprised if they also blackmailed devs for free keys for their giveaways.

Let's not make guesses or assumptions like this. A lot of groups have wrongly been lumped with this accusation just because they've done giveaways.

Let us stick with what we know :)
